Experience
cooktown's world famous history
Cooktown is the gateway to the Heritage Wilderness
of the Cape York Peninsular and the Great Barrier Reef;
it is one of the most diverse and unspoiled travel destinations
in Queensland.
Cooktown was the first true
European settlement on Australian soil, founded
in 1873 as a port for the Palmer River Gold fields,
it has a rich history of European settlement, Aboriginal,
cultural and natural historical developments. Every
June the town celebrates with a re-enactment of the
landing of Captain Cook to repair the Endeavour after
striking the reef.
Today it is an exotic
tropical town with a relaxing community feel with
game fishing, reef fishing, diving and snorkelling on
the local reefs, which are rated with the best in world.

“Cooktown is much quieter and a nice place
to relax. The town and surrounding area are steeped
in history and there are some excellent walks. I stayed
at Pam's Place, a YHA associate hostel run by the amiable
Scottie and inhabited by his colourful and friendly
birds who just love human company and being scratched
around the head and neck! The dorms were clean and very
comfortable; the modern kitchen was very well equipped
- even cooking oil is supplied. Overall a well run and
very nice place to stay.”
